Hadith 102 Darul Uloom Online
Book: Mishkat al-Athar wa Misbah al-Abrar
Class Timings: Every Friday 8:00 – 9:00
Class #1
Students were introduced to the concept of Hadith and Sunnah. The Hadith representing the collection of words, actions, and approved things witnessed by the prophet, that our scholars have preserved for more than a thousand years. The Sunnah being the living example of the prophet as derived from the numerous different ahadith, as practiced by the earliest generations until now.
This class, HAD 102, uses the book Mishkat al-Athar, which, as its name details, is a textbook of Sunnah. Different chapters introduce concepts that relate directly to how a muslim should live and perceive the world.
The science of Hadith deals with the classification of prophetic narrations based on how they reached us. The primary focus of this class is not to learn about how these ahadith were preserved, and how the reached us, but to learn and act upon the hadith in which are certain came from the prophet.
Hadith #1
Hafiz Allamah ‘Alqama bin Waqqas al-Laythi reports, that he heard Umar bin al-Khattab, saying on the minbar that: “I heard the prophet say: Actions are by intentions, and every man shall get what he intendeds. Whomsoever makes hijrah to acquire some worldly thing, or to marry a woman, his hijrah will be for what he made hijrah for.” Bukhari C1H1
This hadith, ‘Actions are by Intentions’ is very famous and oft quoted. Most recognize it as the very first Hadith in Sahih Bukhari. The Prophet [saw] explains in this hadith the nature and relationship between intention and reward. Those more familiar with the nuances of fiqh and logic are quick ti point out that the prophet [saw] didn’t mean that an action is necessarily worthless because of a ruined intention, but that the reward of that action is directly proportional to the intent a person had when he carried it out.
If a person does something obligatory absentmindedly, his obligation, though fulfilled is without substance and beauty. A person misses out on acquiring great merits, nearness to Allah, and a greater chance at heavenly success. Noble intent, can make even the mundane glorified in the eyes of Allah. We must remember the reason for our existence, why we act, the things we want to achieve, to remember Allah’s place in our lives as we do anything and everything. For this reason this hadith is oft placed in the beginning of books, to remind the author, teacher and student about why we picked up the book in the first place.
