Today I spent time studying quite a few diverse topics. The most recent being Mantiq, the science of logic and its usage, i had discussions about the socio-political climate of 2nd generation american muslims, the new hidayah edition that includes qawaid, bitcoin mining, a rightwing antimuslim muslim thinktank, and the strange fatawa of Shaykh Ali Gomaa. I also spent 4 hours with Shaykh Samir al-Nass in his Sharh Uqud Rasm Mufti Class.

Logic.

I have decided to use a christian study book in order to teach my students logic. Though its pages are filled with obvious error and bid’at, the text reads like what I have imagined for my eventual publication on mantiq. Simple enough for highschoolers and it has enough information to keep adults engaged.

Teachers edition

I was thinking of using the fallacy detective or some equivalent, but I find that with proper teaching these things might become redundant.

Our main course in IIE will still revolve around Tashil al-mantiq, however, i will supplement it with this text in order to make sure that the principles of logic are both applied and internalized, that it becomes natrual to think well in both english and arabic. The Isagoge will also be added as I will introduce philosophy so that our students can understand what exactly we rejected from aristotle and what we accepted from him and his students. I’m contemplating buying a new translation instead of just using the medieval arabic and english translations. The new edition seems to do a good job at providing a real introduction to the eventual study of Aristotle’s categories, Ibn sina’s shifa and of course imam ghazali and ibn rushd’s tahafutayn.

Ali Gomaa

I found an article about a muslim thinktank being defamed for quoting and/or mentioning Ali Gomaa in a positive light. The blame comes from the fact that he once praised the actions of Hezbolla during the war in the mid 00’s. This however led me to finding entire pages of refutations and records of some of the stranger opinions that he’s had during his tenure as the grand mufti of egypt and later as a respected scholar. Finding out that the dubious Halal to sell Liquor and Pork in “darulharb” fatwa so oft quoted by arab businessmen came from him, based on the claim that the opinion exists within the hanafi madhhab.

A list of his famous fatawa

The muslim thinktank Quilliam came under fire from CJ welermen by posting a report that he deemed very antimuslim and biased. Quoting it as a wetdream for white supremacists everywhere even going as far as to say the group itself is in their pocket.

an interesting read
