What is Usul al-Fiqh?
Rules that govern how fiqh is derived from the 4 sources (Quran, Sunnah, Ijma’, and Ijtihad)
These 4 sources are embedded in the prophetic tradition. Ayah of Quran. Hadith of Muadh.
These 4 sources were acted upon by our pious predecessors.
These 4 sources are the only logical refuge for one who wishes to derive Islamic Law.
- Wahy, Divine Revelation is divided into two parts, the religiously recited (Quran), and the non religously recited (Sunnah).
- Aql, Human Logic and Understanding, is divided into two parts, the agreed upon (Ijma’) and individual convictions(Ijtihad).
The point of Usul al-Fiqh is to know the background of our existing rulings, and to develop the ability to create new ones. This is a necessity of the Muslim Ummah, in order to continue to follow Allah’s commandments through the passage of time.
It is considered Wajib Kifiyah, some members of a muslim community must know it or they will all be considered sinful.
In order to learn Usul al-Fiqh you must be well versed in:
- Ilm al-Kalam Logic and Aqidah
- The Arabic Language, Its divisions and sciences
- Fiqh, al-ahkam al-shar’iyah
