Tajwid Summarized – Rules of Nun: #2 Idgham

Rule two from the rules of Nun
Sakin and Tanwin

Idgham

What is Idgham?

Idgham linguistically means to put one thing into another,
like putting the mushaf into a pocket, or putting a sword in its sheath.

As a term, Idgham refers to the meeting of a Sakin letter,
with a muttaharak letter, in such a way that they become one letter with a
shaddah.

How many letters of Idgham are
there? What are they?

There are only 6 letters of Idgham, and they are:

1 – Ya ي

2- Ra ر

3 – Mim م

4 – Lam ل

5 – Waw و

6 – Nun ن

Combined in the phrase يرملون

Does Idgham have types?

Yes, Idgham is divided into two types:

1-      Idgham with Ghunnah

2-      Idgham without Ghunnah

Idgham with Ghunnah has 4 letters.

Idgham without Ghunnah has 2.

What are the letters of Idgham
with Ghunnah?

There are four, and they are:

Together they form the word yanmu ينمو. This Idgham is also called Idgham Naqis or Incomplete Idgham because of how the letter fails to completely merge and become one (by maintaining its qualities even though it should be considered gone).

    1. Idgham means to add letters together, to merge them
ya nun mim waw merge with nun sakin with a ghunna
lam and ra merge without a ghunna

because of this some people call the first type imperfect or naqis and the second type perfect or tamm
